Good-bye to the Mermaids: A Childhood Lost in Hitler’s Berlin
University of Missouri Press, October 2006
Karin Finell’s memoir, Good-bye to the Mermaids: a Childhood Lost in Hitler’s Berlin, conveys the horrors of war as seen through the eyes of a child. It tells of a convoluted world where children searched for truth and were torn between fear and hope. Karin was six years old when the war began. As a young child she was taken in by Hitler’s propaganda; while her mother, a rebellious artist, wasn’t above speaking out against the Nazis, and her grandmother brought yet another perspective based on her American childhood.
